Star Wars: Rise of Skywalker (2019)

First things first, I would like to say happy (belated) Star Wars Day to you. May the Fourth be with you and I hope you are bingeing all of the Star Wars films.  Massive credit to George Lucas for creating a universe that us Star Wars lovers hold dear to us to this day. From Darth Vader to Yoda to all the Skywalkers in the galaxy, we love them all. So, Mr Lucas, we thank you.

So, this film seems to have its lovers and it also seems to have its haters. And honestly? I understand both sides; I am on the lover side (don’t fight me), but I see both sides. It was funny in some points, but it dragged in other parts. After the divisive reaction to previous film, The Last Jedi (2017), I would imagine director JJ Abrams was looking to win back the Star Wars faithful with the most recent instalment of the series.

There's a lot that needs to be uncovered about the ninth episode of the Star Wars Series and there are questions that have been left unanswered about the way this was constructed. The Rise of The Skywalker was meant to be the film that culminates the Star Wars saga and perhaps give the fans the satisfactory ending that they needed.

Yet, it didn't feel satisfying. It wasn't terrible nor atrocious, but it wasn't spectacular either. Personally, I think that this is where Marvel shone through when they closed Phase one with Avengers Endgame (2019). It gave the fans the emotional closure that they needed and birthed new beginnings for other characters, which raises the curtain for the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

I'm going to jump right into it and start with the craziest notion of the film. The return of Palpatine. If I have anything more to develop about that I would, but that's actually the gist of the film. Emperor Palpatine returns to the fore and with that it becomes the main plot of the storyline and the main drive for The Resistance going all out for battle one last time. Against the infamous Lord Sith. Whatever you want to call him.

The character development of Rey and Kylo Ren were perhaps the biggest highlights of the film. We see that Rey is having to wrestle with the dark past of her family history and resist the prophecy spoken over her by Palpatine. Oh yeah, I forgot to mention, she is the Sith Emperor's granddaughter. Funny how that turns out right? More complications I say.

We also get to see the dark side of her; we see her inherit all of the past Jedi forces in the last battle as she defeats her 900-year-old Grandfather (or however old he is). It was incredibly nostalgic to hear the voices of the legendary characters from the previous films, such as Yoda (not the baby one), Mace Windu, Anakin Skywalker, Obi-Wan Kenobi and so much more. Bravo, Abrams. Kylo Ren's development was something interesting to note as well, he was also struggling to fight his heritage as a Skywalker.  It seems that he had set plans on eliminating his Superior, Palpatine and taking over his throne. An interesting intervention through the spirit of his Mother (Rest in peace, Carrie Fisher) Leia and the imagination of his Father, Han Solo. All in all, it was made to be feel good in this film.

I have to say whilst this was meant to be the ultimate for this current phase, it did feel as though the creators of the film were rather cautious. What they lacked in the depth of the storyline and the development of the other major characters, they more than made up for it in the fight scenes, particularly the one involving the Resistance blowing up all the Destroyers- that was satisfying. All the allies turning up to help out Poe and Finn? Oh, that was beautiful I have to admit. Speaking on those two characters, for the roles that they had in the story, there was not enough of them on the screen and there was very little for them to do This was surprising but it appears that Abrams and his team had to make a lot of sacrifices in order to make this film work.

As a Star Wars fan, I do recommend that you go and watch the film perhaps to just get closure on the series. I would prefer you to make your own judgement on the franchise and I would like to hear your own opinion on this film.

Till next time, folks.
