Very good morning to you or evening or afternoon (whenever this article finds you, hello to you). I would like to present you all with another list of films that I consider to be a strong favorite of mine. This time around I will be looking at Pixar films simply because you cannot go wrong with Pixar films. Without further ado, I would like to get this party started.
Let the games begin!
5. The Incredibles (2004)
The first time I saw this film, I was in total awe and it never ceased to amaze me every time I saw The Incredibles. It had everything that you could want and more. This included the wow factor, emotional rollercoasters, laugh out loud moments, and an ever-growing love for Baby Jack-Jack (fan club right here). The film is centered around a retired superhero, Robert 'Bob' Parr aka Mr. Incredible, who was now working in an insurance firm (doesn’t really sound like the type of life a retired superhero should be living, right?). It is quite clear to see that the famed Mr. Incredible misses his old life, always looking to save someone in despair( which actually cost him his job. Yikes). As it skips along, he's offered a very high paying job to complete some missions, which turns out to be a scam and Parr ends up dragging his family into the mess that he caused. Whilst I enjoyed the film, I would have hoped that we would have seen more of the children particularly Dash and Violet. I do think the character development was not evenly spread and I do think it felt more like a memoir for Mr. Incredible, than a film about a Superhero family.
Nevertheless, it is a timeless classic and for that, it is in my top 5.
4. Up (2009)
As far as Pixar films are concerned, this one does not get enough respect. Whenever I hear discussions about which of the Pixar films are the best, Up is rarely discussed, and frankly, that's a shame. It is full of life, funny and original. It sets out in pushing boundaries and it explores the topic of grief, friendship, joy, and sadness. Credit to the writer Bob Paterson and director Pete Docter for maintaining a simplistic tone throughout the film; they could have very easily chosen to go overboard with gimmickry and slapstick action. Had they gone down that route, the film would have certainly lost its value. If you haven’t seen this already, I would highly recommend that you watch this. If you have watched this film, the same applies. I might be biased when I say this, but the first five minutes of Up is probably the best sequence I have seen in an animated film. Not biased at all (there's no dialogue in this, so un-Disney like).
3. Coco (2017)
Pixar has been incredibly unconventional when it comes to exploring new cultures and conveying new ideas. It's really refreshing to see and brings variety to each of the films that have been created by Pixar. Coco is no different. I really appreciate how Coco explores Mexican culture, without bringing any stereotypical tropes or any jokes that would be considered offensive. Everything about Coco was authentic and it was beautifully written. It was colorful, full of life and the songs in this film, they're wonderful to sing along to. If you hear THAT rendition of Remember Me and you don't cry? You're not human. I watched this film twice and it still caught me out with tears both times. Unforgivable. I still sing the song, Remember Me and Un Poco Loco when I'm alone… Just mind your business, okay?
2. Wall-E (2008)
Here we have the world's most loveable robot (after R2-D2 of course), Wall-E. With the big googly eyes and the cuboid figure, he sets the cinema world alight. Roaming around with his curiosity, looking to save the world from self-destructing because of neglect to the environment. I don't know how Pixar pulled this off- for such a long period of time in the film (40 minutes to be exact!) there was utter silence in the film. We meet wall-e for the first time, attached to old reruns of hello dolly! I think he was made for Broadway with his dance moves. We see that Wall-E is not your conventional robot, he has developed feelings, he likes things, he likes to dance (seriously Broadway). This was such a bold and daring move from Pixar, pushing the boundaries. They got bored with humans and decided to explore elsewhere, why not?
1. Toy Story (1995)
I think you knew that this film was coming right? This is the classic feel-good animation film. It is timeless, to say the least, we have some of the memorable moments in the film that are now a part of meme culture today. "It seems that there are no signs of intelligent life here" (you would see this on Facebook when people used it out of context i.e. shadiness to another. Karens). Or the famous song that is used in the film, "You've Got a Friend in Me" is so hard to miss when you hear it. Last but not least we have the great characters: Buzz Lightyear, Sheriff Woody, Jessica and so many more. The world in which the toys' lives seem so much fun right? There are threats to their life, but I won’t give much away if you haven't seen this film (I am judging you if you haven't). This for me is Pixar's best film and I think it will take a lot for this film to be dethroned from the top spot.
There are some films that I feel deserve an honorable mention and they are as followed:
· Finding Nemo
· Ratatouille
· Bao (short film)
I understand very much that you may not agree entirely with my list, you may even have a list of your own. In that case, I would love to hear your thoughts and what your top 5 Pixar films are. Please do leave a comment down below and let me know what your thoughts are!
With that, I bid you, adieu.
Till next time.
