Pink (2016)

PINK – Movie Review - Cinecelluloid

I have to commend the filmmakers of Pink, for being so bold in making this film. This is an incredible take on how to deal with feudal mindsets, especially when it comes to dealing with sensitive issues such as sexual assault.

Not only that, the film also tackles the topic of corruption and how cases like this often get swept under the carpet in today's society purely because of someone's influence.

This was tackled very well and credit to Amitabh Bachchan, who seems to really own the role of a lawyer. Speaking for those that cannot speak for themselves. A real social justice warrior (not those that are ridiculed on social media platforms). A commendable effort to Taapsee Pannu, who made the role of Minal her own and it was a gripping performance from the actress.

This film is centred around three girls, Minal Arora, Falak Ali and Andrea Tariang- three friends who live together. They are all working professionals in their respective fields and they live in a good neighbourhood as tenants. The girls see their worlds turned upside down after one fateful night, a night out goes completely awry and it would threaten to destroy to their livelihoods. We see that Minal is facing a charge for "Attempt to Murder" and possible imprisonment for 10 years or more. This is a result of an altercation she had with a young man, Rajveer Singh, whom she hit with a glass bottle. This led to the young man being near-blinded. Yet this was a result of Minal trying to defend herself after Rajveer was inappropriately touching Minal.

All of the resulting incidents led to a FIR (a first information report) being filed by the girls. What was unfortunate however is that this worked against the girls, as this led to an "Attempt to Murder" being carried out against Minal. As the film progresses, we see how hard the girls are having to fight to get the court in their favour.

It was very easy for me to be invested into the film and for me to root for the girls. We see that their image is questioned, and their personalities scrutinised. The character of the women is also brought into question, why? Because they were with three boys after dark unattended. So, all of a sudden, they are brought to blame.

Rather than the morals and the behaviours of the boys being questioned- having committed sexual assault too- it was the girls that were in the firing line for the majority of the film. Sadly, this is a reflection of the society that we live in. Women are constantly having to jump all sorts of impossible hurdles in order to get justice and this is common worldwide unfortunately.

Pink is a very raw, emotional piece to watch. It is something that I would certainly recommend. If you have watched this, I would love to know what your thoughts on the film are. Leave a comment down below.

Till next time
